4 Unexpected Color Combinations That Will Change the Way You Get Dressed
You have more to wear than you think. You just need to see your closet differently.
The idea that everything in your outfit needs to match is not a style rule. It is a fear habit. And I see it all the time with my clients: two beautiful pieces they love, sitting unworn in the same closet, because no one ever told them they were allowed to put them together.
This season I really want to challenge you to think differently about color. Not about matching it, but about pairing it. Because when you start seeing your wardrobe through that lens, you suddenly have so many more options than you thought.
Here are four Spring/Summer combinations I am completely obsessed with right now, and why each one works.
Combo #1 Butter Yellow + Chocolate Brown
This one surprises people every time, but it is actually one of the most grounded pairings you can wear. Both colors share warm, earthy undertones which is exactly what makes them feel so intentional together. Think yellow linen trousers with a chocolate brown knit tied over your shoulders, or a buttery slip dress with brown strappy sandals and a matching tote. The yellow lifts, the brown anchors. It is effortlessly chic.

Combo #2 Cherry Red + Ballet Pink
This is what I call a tonal contrast pairing. Both colors are from the same family, but one is saturated and bold while the other is soft and quiet. That difference in intensity is what makes the outfit pop. A cherry red top paired back to pink pant is equal parts polished and playful. And don’t forget about your accessories. A red shoe or a pink bag is a perfect way to play with this combination.
Combo #3 Lavender + Camel
Lavender and camel is one of those combinations that feels a little unexpected until you see it together and then you wonder why you were not wearing it all along. The softness of lavender paired with the warmth of camel creates this incredibly elegant balance, one cool, one warm, meeting somewhere in the middle in the most beautiful way. Think a lavender linen button down tucked into camel wide leg trousers, or a camel blazer layered over a flowy lavender midi dress. It feels polished without trying too hard, which is honestly the whole goal.

Combo #4 Sage Green + Butter Yellow
This combination feels like a Spring garden in the best possible way. Sage green and butter yellow both have a softness to them that makes them feel completely natural together, like they were always meant to share space. A sage green linen blazer over a butter yellow sundress, or yellow wide leg trousers with a sage green tank and woven tote. It is the kind of outfit that feels effortless and put together all at once.

The bottom line is this: your closet is more versatile than you think it is. You just need permission to experiment. So this week, I am officially giving it to you. Pull out two pieces you have never worn together and put them on. Give yourself two full minutes before you decide anything. I think you are going to surprise yourself.
XO, Kim
